Ouachita Mountains

The Ouachita Mountains, the southern part of the U.S. Forested Inland Highlands in the states of Arkansas and Oklahoma; approx. 30,000 km2, highest sections 800-900 m. The area contains a beautiful and varied nature with many mineral springs that are exploited in spa town Hot Springs. In numerous river courses, dams have been built, which with associated hydropower plants make the region an important electricity supplier. The Ouachita Mountains are by the Arkansas River to the north separated from the Ozark Mountains.

Ozark Mountains

Ozark Mountains, the Ozark Plateau, the northern part of the United States' forested interior highlands between the Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, and prairie rivers; in total approx. 130,000 km2, of which the majority in the states of Missouri and Arkansas. Most of the area is heavily hilly with steep cliffs and numerous rivers and lakes, many of which are formed by the tributaries of tributaries to Missouri, such as the Harry S. Truman Reservoir and Lake of the Ozarks. The highest sections (700-800 m) are found in the Boston Mountains to the south. Both here and elsewhere in the scenic landscape, tourism is an important supplement to e.g. forestry, agriculture (mostly for self-sufficiency) and mining (lead, zinc, limestone). The region as a whole is sparsely populated and economically backward.
